All these years, Sarah Ouseph has been carrying a dark secret with her, while
her past haunted her each day. And when she finally reveals the truth to her
son Bibin, their relationship is shattered and sends him into madness. On the
other side, CI Aji Kurian investigates Sarah's confession as part of an
extensive investigation into the suspicious death of an actress. What has Sarah
confessed, and who is this killer killing people and camouflaging their death
as suicide or natural death?

Najeem Koya neatly brings the skills of his cast together to form an engrossing
storyline that keeps crime thriller lovers at the edge of their seats. The film
is set in a remote area where Sarah is haunted by her past, and her son Bibin
is sensitive and dedicatedly looking after his mother. One fateful day, a
shocking revelation by Sarah tears them apart and turns their lives into a
fatality. CI Kurian's search for the murderer of the actress unknowingly digs
into the deeper connections of Sarah and Bibin's disturbing past, putting many
lives at risk.
The series is pegged on a question: will CI Kurian be able to unmask the
identity behind a string of murders passed off as suicide or natural deaths? Is
he able to unmask the reason behind such an act and bring the criminal to
justice?
Eerie elements have been cleverly interlaced in the show by the makers to keep
the viewers glued to the screen as they await each episode. The revelation of
the culprit is quick, while the motive and manner behind the crimes are the
core things that make this Malayalam thriller different.
What really works for this series is how incredibly sane the perpetrator's
psychology is presented, without the recourse of very elaborately contrived
misdirection or genre clichés. The writing eschews the usual portrayals of
sociopaths, and that is refreshing.
The performances really lift this series to great heights. Rahman was long
overdue for a role like this in Malayalam, and he puts up an engaging portrayal
of CI Aji Kurian, who is cool but menacing-a silent killer of an investigator.
Neena Gupta seems all too powerful with the mystique of Sarah even with
relatively lesser screen time. Other underused, talented gems in the cast
include Sanju Sivaram, whose contributions help lift the show. The tension
throughout the series is kept up by the music of Sankar Sharma.
Although the series is long, there is never a dip in the telling as it
maintains viewer interest from beginning to end. Finally, the makers leave this
season open to a probable second season as the credits roll.
Verdict
1000 Babies is a well-crafted crime thriller that keeps one on the edge of
their seats, setting standards for Malayalam web series.
