MOVIES

MALAYALAM
Mohanlal started his film career in 1978 with Thiranottam but unfortunately the film could not be released as the censor board had some problems with it. Manjil Virinja Pookkal was his second movie where he played a negative role. His acting prowess was noticed in this movie. In a short span of five years, between 1980 and 1985, the actor finished more than 50 movies. I. V. Sasi's Uyarangalil was his biggest hit during this time. In Priyadarshan's debut Poochakkoru Mookkuthi he played a comic role for the first time.

The period between 1986 to 1995 was lucky for him. He received the Kerala State Award for Best Actor for T.P.Balagopalan M.A. In Rajavinte Makan he was seen as an underworld don. He took up a variety of roles like a journalist in Panchagni, a house-owner in Sanmanassu Ullavarku Samadhanam, an asylum inmate in Thalavattom, a farm owner in Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, as a Gorkha in Gandhi Nagar 2nd street, and a Gulf returnee in Varavelpu.

Mohanlal played a typical romantic hero for Priyadarshan's Chithram and Kilukkam. He was appreciated for his performance in these roles. Some of his movies like Thoovanathumbikal, Thazhvaram, Padmarajan, and Bharathan are well noted. In Amrithamgamaya he played the role of a man who kills a boy during ragging in college. Mohanlal's role as a criminal in Kireedam brought him a Special Jury Award. He won the National Award for Best Actor for Bharatham.

Mohanlal acted in Priyadarshan's Kalapani, which was released in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. This is the story about the cellular prisons of Andaman Islands set during India's struggle for freedom. He played a Kathakali dancer in Vaanaprastham which brought him a second National Award for Best Actor and the film was selected for the Cannes Film Festival.

He has worked with all the well known directors of the film industry like I. V. Sasi in Devaasuram, Bhadran in Spadikam, Ram Gopal Varma in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, and Mani Ratnam in Iruvar.

Having started off with Thiranottam, way back in 1978, it has been a long journey indeed for the wonderful actor. The gradual metamorphosis from the villain in Manjil Virinja Pookal to the invincible hero in Narasimham has uncovered before us the several faces of the actor who is widely known all over as one of the most versatile performers around.

Winner of two National Awards and six State Awards for Best Actor, Mohanlal continues to mesmerize us with his spell binding performances, year after year.

Mohanlal has quite a few interesting films lined up in 2010, and his fans are eagerly on the lookout for 'Oru Naal Varum' that is expected to bring back fond old memories of those golden days when Mohanlal and Sreenivasan used to be the most adored pair in Malayalam films.

What do you think of Mohanlal acting in all these films in 3 to 4 years? While actors in north are following 1 film per year norm he is working in more than 10 films, will that affect the quality? What does he have to achieve by doing this?

His anxious fans are worried of him not taking rest. Is it his decision to act in this much films or someone else coerces him to sign, who knows?
